Closer Look: Trans, Zip, and Slant Jacket

The Engineered Garments Fall Winter 2024 collection introduces the Zip Jacket, the Trans Jacket, and the Slant Jacket. These designs are a trio of avant-garde jackets encapsulating Fall Winter 2024’s experimentation with structure, proportion, and detailing.

At first glance, the Zip Jacket resembles a classic blazer, revealing its subversive details on a second glance—a nod to the experimental edge of 1980s fashion. The proportions are wide yet intentional, with shoulders that slouch just enough.

Designer Daiki Suzuki camouflages the zippers within the jacket’s structure, allowing it to be styled formally with the zippers closed or opened to reveal layers beneath. The Zip Jacket is an adaptable framework for the wearer to reimagine its silhouette and function.

The Trans Jacket, anchored by a classic two-button front and double back vent, includes interchangeable collars—a peaked lapel and a shawl collar. Either lapel or the option to go collarless alters the jacket’s tone, moving between traditional formality and minimalist modernity.

The refusal to impose a static structure on the Trans Jacket allows it to transcend conventions, offering limitless possibilities.

Perhaps the most daring of the trio, the Slant Jacket embraces asymmetry, showcasing a curved front panel that sweeps dramatically across the body, leaving the right side open.

The left pocket hangs slightly lower, evoking the feel of a game or fishing pocket – subtly paying homage to Engineered Garments’ workwear inspirations.

The back of the Slant Jacket mirrors the same philosophy. A slanted hemline and curved seams create movement and structure that feel deliberate and freeform.

These three jackets showcase the Fall Winter 2024 season’s dialogue with memory and the nature of clothing itself. Recalling the 1980s designers who embraced experimentation, these pieces become tools for expression—wearable art pieces that reward those who look closer and engage more deeply.
