The Engineered Garments FA Pant, introduced in the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, draws inspiration from mid-20th-century French military attire, specifically the TAP Modèle Extrême-Orient trousers designed for French airborne troops during the Indochina campaign. These original military garments were crafted for functionality, featuring multiple specialized pockets and reinforced areas to meet the demands of combat situations.
Designer Daiki Suzuki reimagined these utilitarian elements to create the FA Pant, a contemporary piece that balances practicality with modern aesthetics. The “FA” stands for “French Army,” reflecting its military heritage. The pant is notable for its abundance of pockets: two standard seam pockets, two inverted-pleat bellows cargo pockets on the sides, and three button-flap 3D pockets on the front, including a smaller pocket on the left leg. This design not only offers ample storage but also adds a distinctive visual appeal.
In the Fall Winter 2024 collection, Daiki updates the FA Pant to align with the season’s theme, drawing inspiration from 1980s designers and his recollections of that era. This includes covering the buttons on the pocket flaps, a subtle modification that enhances the pant’s sleekness while maintaining its functional roots. This design choice reflects the influence of Japanese and European designers from the era, who reinterpreted classic silhouettes with innovative details.
The FA Pant exemplifies Engineered Garments’ philosophy of blending historical references with contemporary design. By integrating elements from vintage military uniforms and updating them with modern tailoring and materials, the FA Pant offers a unique fusion of past and present, appealing to those who appreciate functionality and style.
